About Readers & Keypads

Readers and keypads are the device at the door that authenticates a credential — a card, fob, phone, or PIN — and signals the access control panel to release the lock. The right reader depends on three things: the platform it talks to (Brivo cloud, HID-compatible enterprise, or Paxton), the credentials your people will carry (mobile, smart card, legacy Prox, or PIV), and the environment it lives in (lobby, exterior, vandal-prone, or single-door auxiliary). We install, commission, and support readers from Brivo, HID, and Paxton across Chicago, the North Shore, and the northwest, west, and southwest suburbs — and we help match the right reader to the right opening at every project.

Brands and platforms we install

Pick the reader brand based on the access control platform — Brivo for cloud-managed, HID for open-OSDP enterprise, or Paxton for on-premises and standalone projects.

  • Brivo Smart Readers

Native readers for the Brivo cloud platform. Mullion (B-BSMF), single-gang (B-BSSF), and integrated keypad (B-BSKF) bodies in black and white, plus tri-tech (BSPMF / BSPSF / BSPKF) variants that also read legacy 125 kHz HID Prox for migration projects. Bluetooth, NFC, 13.56 MHz smart card, OSDP. Best fit for HOAs, multi-tenant residential, retail, and small-to-mid commercial.

  • HID Signo

The modern enterprise standard. Models 20, 40, and keypad 40K, plus PIV-rated variants for federal projects. Reads Seos, iCLASS, MIFARE DESFire, HID Prox, and mobile credentials simultaneously — the universal upgrade path for any HID installed base. OSDP, IK10 vandal rating, HID Mobile Access. Best fit for healthcare, banking, federal, and multi-site enterprise.

  • HID iCLASS SE / multiCLASS SE / pivCLASS / Proximity

Targeted readers for specific credential populations: iCLASS SE (Seos and iCLASS only), multiCLASS SE (Seos / iCLASS / MIFARE / Prox combo), pivCLASS (federal FIPS 201 PIV), and the legacy ProxPoint / ProxPro / ThinLine II / MiniProx 125 kHz family. Used for installed-base maintenance and credential-policy-specific deployments.

  • Paxton — Net2, Paxton10, Touchlock

Three Paxton platforms in one ecosystem. Paxton10 (cloud, with Slimline, Vandal-Resistant, integrated Keypad 2-factor, and Desktop enrollment readers). Net2 / Switch2 (on-premises, with KP50 indoor and KP75 MIFARE outdoor metal keypad readers). Touchlock (standalone single-door PIN-only keypads with built-in controllers for outdoor sheds, mechanical rooms, and auxiliary doors).

How to choose the right reader

Four practical questions decide which reader fits each opening. Use them as a checklist when planning a new project or upgrade.

  • 1. Where does it physically mount?

Mullion (~45 mm wide) clips onto narrow aluminum frames at storefront and lobby doors. Single-gang fits a standard US wall plate next to the door — the most common commercial form. Single-gang + keypad adds PIN entry for 2-factor doors at sensitive areas. Long-range extends identification distance to several meters for parking decks and elevators. Standalone keypad runs a single door with no separate controller.

  • 2. Which credentials will people carry?

Mobile + multi-tech reads phones plus 13.56 MHz smart cards (Brivo, HID Signo, Paxton10). Mobile + multi-tech + Prox adds legacy 125 kHz for migration projects (Brivo tri-tech, HID multiCLASS SE, HID Signo). Smart card 13.56 MHz only (HID iCLASS SE) for Seos / iCLASS-only sites. 125 kHz Prox only for legacy ProxPoint / ProxPro / ThinLine II maintenance. FIPS 201 PIV for federal facilities. Standalone PIN for keypad-only doors.

  • 3. Indoor, outdoor, or vandal-prone?

Standard plastic readers (Brivo, HID Signo plastic body) suit indoor and protected-outdoor positions. Vandal-resistant readers (HID Signo metal kits, Paxton10 010-254, Paxton Touchlock 521-715, HID iCLASS SE metal R10) bring IK10 impact rating, 4-point security-screw mounting, and IP67 weatherproofing — the right pick for school exteriors, parking decks, public buildings, and unsupervised outdoor entries.

  • 4. OSDP or Wiegand wiring?

For any new-build project we default to OSDP v2 — encrypted, bidirectional, supports tamper detection, and uses one wire pair for unlimited readers. Wiegand remains acceptable only for legacy maintenance and minor retrofits. Every reader on this page is OSDP-capable.

Common Chicago use cases

  • Multi-tenant residential & HOAs

Brivo cloud or Paxton10 with mobile credentials at the lobby, garage, amenity floors, and service entries. Resident self-service through Brivo Mobile Pass or Paxton Connect.

  • Healthcare

HID Signo or Paxton10 Keypad at restricted areas — pharmacy, medication storage, records, IT closets. PIV variants where federal grant requirements apply.

  • Banking & financial services

HID Signo with 2-factor at vault back-office and ATM vestibules. pivCLASS where federal compliance is required. Encrypted DESFire for high-value branches.

  • Education

HID Signo or Paxton10 Vandal-Resistant at school exteriors. Standard Signo or Brivo at staff entries and administrative offices. Touchlock keypads at outbuildings and equipment storage.

  • Federal & federally-funded facilities

HID Signo PIV (20-PIV, 40-PIV, 40K-PIV) and HID pivCLASS for HSPD-12 compliance. We commission the full PIV authentication flow and validate against the panel.

  • Retail, hospitality, commercial offices

Brivo or Paxton10 with mobile-first credentials. KP50 / KP75 keypads at back-of-house and service entries where 2-factor is desired without full PIV.

  • Outdoor sheds, mechanical rooms, gates

Paxton Touchlock standalone — a single keypad, programmed locally, no networked panel required. Right tool when the rest of the project is networked but one door isn't worth the wiring.

Migration and future-proofing

Most Chicago commercial buildings already have something installed. We plan reader upgrades so existing credentials keep working while you migrate to the more secure technology.

125 kHz Prox → 13.56 MHz secure smart card. Tri-tech readers (Brivo BSP series, HID Signo, HID multiCLASS SE) read both at the same time. Issue new smart cards or mobile credentials to new staff; legacy Prox cards still work until the population rolls over.

Wiegand → OSDP encrypted. New panel-side wiring takes one cable run for an unlimited number of readers and adds tamper detection. Existing Wiegand readers can stay on their own home runs while OSDP rolls out per opening.

Cards-only → mobile-first. Brivo Mobile Pass, HID Mobile Access, and Paxton Connect all support Apple Wallet / Google Wallet for tap-to-enter on the phone. Most properties roll out mobile to all new tenants and keep cards for visitors and contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which reader brand should I pick for a Chicago commercial building? +
It depends on the access control platform you choose. Brivo Smart Readers are the natural fit for Brivo cloud deployments — common at HOAs, multi-tenant residential, retail, and small-to-mid commercial buildings that want browser-based admin and mobile credentials. HID Signo is the enterprise standard for projects on Genetec, Lenel, Software House, AMAG, and other open-OSDP platforms — strong fit for healthcare, banking, federal, and large multi-site commercial. Paxton (Net2 / Switch2 on-prem or Paxton10 cloud) is the go-to for property managers and HOAs that want self-administration without a third-party monitoring contract. We help select per-project at a free site walkthrough.
What is the difference between MIFARE DESFire CSN and encrypted-read? +
Every MIFARE DESFire credential has a unique Card Serial Number (CSN) that any reader can read without keys — this is "CSN-only" mode. CSN reading is convenient but offers no real cryptographic security: the CSN is essentially a public ID. Encrypted-read mode (also called "secure DESFire") requires the reader to hold cryptographic keys and authenticate against the card, returning a key-protected Application ID — this is the secure mode banks, hospitals, and federal facilities require. Many readers (Brivo, HID Signo, Paxton10) support both modes; we specify the variant matching your credential policy at site walkthrough.
Do I need OSDP, or is Wiegand still fine? +
For new installations we install OSDP v2 wiring on every door capable of supporting it. OSDP provides bidirectional encrypted communication between reader and controller, eliminates the credential-cloning attacks that plague Wiegand, supports tamper detection and reader health monitoring, and dramatically reduces wiring (one pair for unlimited readers vs. 6+ wires per Wiegand reader). HID Signo, Brivo Smart Readers, and Paxton10 all default to OSDP. Wiegand remains acceptable for legacy installed-base maintenance and very simple single-door retrofits, but it should not be the default for any new-build commercial project.
Can I use mobile credentials at all my doors? +
Yes — every modern reader on this page supports Bluetooth and / or NFC mobile credentials. Brivo issues credentials through the Brivo Mobile Pass app and Apple Wallet / Google Wallet. HID Signo issues through HID Mobile Access and Apple Wallet. Paxton10 issues through the Paxton Connect app. Mobile credentials reduce card-replacement costs (no more lost-card fees), improve security (per-device, revocable instantly), and improve user experience. We typically deploy mobile as the primary issuance and keep physical cards for visitors and contractors.
Mullion vs. single-gang vs. long-range — what fits where? +
Mullion readers (~45 mm wide) clip onto the metal mullion of an aluminum-and-glass storefront door — common at office building entries, retail, and lobby vestibules. Single-gang readers fit a standard US single-gang wall plate (~70 mm wide), mounted next to the door — the most common form for general commercial doors. Single-gang + keypad adds an integrated PIN keypad for 2-factor doors at server rooms, pharmacies, and bank back-offices. Long-range readers (HID iCLASS SE R90, parking-deck and elevator-call readers) extend identification distance to several meters for hands-free vehicle and elevator-call applications. Standalone keypads run a single door without any separate controller.
How are vandal-resistant readers different? +
Vandal-resistant readers (HID Signo with optional vandal kits, Paxton10 010-254, Paxton Touchlock 521-715 metal, HID iCLASS SE R10 metal variants) feature heavy metal housings or surrounds, IK10 impact ratings, 4-point security-screw mounting that cannot be pried off with a screwdriver, and IP67 weatherproofing. Standard plastic readers like the Brivo Smart Readers are rated IP65 — fine for indoor and protected-outdoor positions, but not appropriate for school exteriors, parking decks, public-building exteriors, or unsupervised outdoor positions where vandalism is a real risk in Chicago.
What is FIPS 201 PIV and when do I need it? +
FIPS 201 PIV (Personal Identity Verification) is the federal cryptographic credential standard mandated for federal agencies, federal contractors, and federally-funded facilities (HSPD-12 sites, federal buildings, certain healthcare and research facilities receiving federal grants). PIV credentials use X.509 certificates and require readers that support the full PIV authentication flow — HID Signo PIV (20-PIV, 40-PIV, 40K-PIV) and HID pivCLASS readers are the standard choices. Most commercial Chicago projects do not need PIV-grade readers; we use them specifically for federal-tenant buildings, federal-grant healthcare and education, and HSPD-12 contractor sites.
How do standalone keypads compare to networked access control? +
Standalone keypads like the Paxton Touchlock contain a built-in controller — you wire them directly to the lock, program PINs locally, and that single door is managed independently of any networked system. Perfect for outdoor sheds, detached garages, mechanical / electrical rooms, pool gates, and construction-site entries. Trade-off: no centralized audit trail, no time-of-day rules across multiple doors, no remote PIN management, no integration with cameras or visitor management. Most commercial properties we install run networked AC at primary doors and standalone Touchlock keypads at the auxiliary outdoor doors — the right tool per opening.
Does Vidimost ship readers nationally or only Chicago-local? +
Vidimost is a Chicago-local commercial integrator — we install readers on-site across the full Chicago metropolitan area (Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, Will, McHenry, and Kendall counties), including the city, North Shore (Wilmette, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest), northwest suburbs (Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Palatine), DuPage corridor (Naperville, Wheaton, Oak Brook, Downers Grove, Lombard), and southwest / west suburbs.
