Schlage Commercial Locks for Chicago Buildings

A hundred-year-old name still on half the doors in America

Schlage is the rare brand that’s both a household word and a commercial-security workhorse. It was founded in 1920 by Walter Schlage, a German-born inventor who had already patented a door lock that could switch on a room’s lights, and who went on to popularize the cylindrical pin-tumbler lock — the push-button-in-the-knob design that became the American standard. The company ran out of San Francisco for most of its life, moved to Colorado Springs in 1997, and today is the flagship lock brand of Allegion, the security company that separated from Ingersoll Rand in 2013. A century on, “schlage lock company” and “schlage locksmith” are still among the most-searched terms in door hardware, because the name is shorthand for a lock you can trust.

Commercial and multifamily, not just the front-door deadbolt

Most people meet Schlage as residential locks — locksets, handlesets, levers, and knobs on a home’s doors. On the smart-lock side, Schlage’s Encode line put WiFi straight into a deadbolt — the Encode and Encode Plus are the ones behind searches like “schlage encode smart wifi deadbolt.” For multifamily and commercial common areas, the more relevant product is the XE360 wireless lock, built to put a whole bank of doors — mailrooms, gyms, amenity spaces, storage — onto an access system without running power and data to every frame. It’s the difference between a smart lock you manage from an app and a wireless lock that’s genuinely part of the building’s access control.

Readers, controllers, and credentials

Where a door already has an access panel, Schlage supplies the reader-and-credential layer. The multi-technology MT and MTK readers and keypads handle cards, fobs, and PINs; the Zentra controllers (the RC series) run the doors; and Schlage’s smart credentials issue the cards and fobs. Because it’s all under Allegion, the hardware integrates cleanly with the major access platforms we install.

Keying, rekeying, and locksmith work

A lot of Schlage searches — keying, rekeying kits, “schlage locksmith” — are really lock-service questions. For a commercial building, rekeying a mechanical lock is straightforward locksmith work, but the better long-term answer for a property with turnover is usually electronic credentials: instead of cutting keys and rekeying cylinders every time a tenant leaves, you deactivate a card or a mobile credential in software. That shift from brass to credentials is most of what we help buildings do.
