Verkada is Silicon Valley’s answer to “why is physical security still so complicated?” It was founded in 2016 in San Mateo, California, by a group of Stanford-connected engineers led by Filip Kaliszan, with a simple bet: make enterprise cameras that a normal IT person can actually run — no NVR humming in a closet, no DVR to configure, just cameras that record locally and stream to a web dashboard. It worked fast. The whole idea is a single pane of glass: one login to watch every camera, unlock every door, and pull footage from anywhere, with AI search and firmware updates handled in the cloud. For an organization with a lean IT team and a lot of sites, that “it just works from a browser” model is the entire pitch.

Verkada cameras: dome, bullet, and everything cloud

The core of the line is cameras. Verkada’s dome cameras cover interiors, lobbies, and corridors; its bullet cameras handle exterior, parking, and perimeter runs; and there are multisensor, fisheye, and PTZ options for bigger scenes. What’s different is that every camera has onboard storage and talks to the cloud directly — so there’s no separate recorder to buy, size, or maintain, and footage is searchable from a browser or phone. That architecture is why people cross-shop it against other cloud platforms rather than against a traditional NVR.

Cameras were just the start. Verkada now runs a full platform on the same dashboard: access control for doors, environmental sensors (air quality, vape, temperature, occupancy), alarms, and a growing line of video intercoms — the TD52 and TD53 — that ring a phone or the front desk and tie the door-release event straight to camera footage.
