The quiet Canadian giant of enterprise security

Genetec is, by most measures, the biggest name in serious video management software — and it got there without ever taking venture money. Founded in 1997 in Montreal by Pierre Racz, who still runs it, the company stayed private and independent while most of its rivals were swallowed by conglomerates. Today it employs well over two thousand people, serves customers in more than 80 countries, and holds the number-one VMS position in the Americas — an 18% share of a multi-billion-dollar market it has led for years running. When an airport, a transit system, a city, or a hospital network needs one platform to run everything, Genetec is usually on the shortlist.

Security Center: one platform instead of five

Security Center is the reason Genetec exists, and its whole purpose is unification. Instead of one system for cameras, another for doors, and a third for license plates, it pulls video surveillance, access control, automatic license-plate recognition, communications, analytics, and intrusion into a single operator screen. It’s open-architecture, so it manages cameras and hardware from many manufacturers rather than locking you to one — which is exactly why large operators choose it to tie a mixed, grown-over-time system together under one interface.

Synergis: Genetec access control

Plenty of people first meet Genetec as a camera system and then discover the access side — searches like “genetec synergis” and “genetec cloud access control” are that moment. Synergis is Genetec’s access control module, and it runs doors, readers, and credentials from the same screen operators use for video. It works with standard OSDP and mixed reader/controller hardware rather than a proprietary lock-in, and its cloud-connected options let an organization manage access without a rack of on-prem servers. For a security team, having a door-forced alarm and the camera that saw it on one pane is the entire appeal.

AutoVu, Stratocast, and the rest of the platform

AutoVu is Genetec’s license-plate recognition — parking enforcement, permit management, and vehicle tracking. Stratocast is its cloud-hosted video service for organizations that want SaaS video without a server room. Both live inside the same Security Center world, which is the recurring theme with Genetec: add a capability, keep one interface.
