intercoms 2n butterflymx condo comparison

2N and ButterflyMX are two of the most common video intercom platforms we install in Chicago condo buildings. Both deliver video calling, mobile app access, and remote door release — but they approach the problem differently. Here’s an honest comparison.

Architecture: IP vs Cloud

2N IP Verso is an IP-based intercom. It runs on your building’s network, can work with a local SIP server or 2N’s cloud platform (My2N), and integrates with a wide range of third-party systems via SIP and HTTP APIs.

ButterflyMX is cloud-native. The panel connects to the internet and everything — directory management, call routing, access logs — lives in ButterflyMX’s cloud. There’s no local server option.

When 2N Makes More Sense

  • Integration-heavy projects: If you need the intercom to work with existing access control, camera systems, or elevator controls, 2N’s open protocols give you flexibility.
  • Custom configurations: 2N’s modular design lets you combine exactly the components you need — camera, keypad, fingerprint reader, card reader — in one flush-mount frame.
  • Lower long-term cost: If you’re willing to manage the system locally (or through My2N at a lower fee), 2N’s total cost over 5-10 years is typically lower.
  • Buildings wanting vendor independence: 2N uses standard SIP — if you ever switch providers, the hardware still works.

See our 2N IP Verso product page for more details.

When ButterflyMX Makes More Sense

  • Simple deployment: ButterflyMX is designed specifically for multifamily buildings and the setup is straightforward. Less configuration, faster deployment.
  • Resident experience focus: The ButterflyMX app is polished and residents generally find it intuitive. Virtual keys for deliveries are built-in.
  • No IT management: Everything is cloud-managed. No local server, no network configuration beyond internet access.
  • Property management companies: If your management company already uses ButterflyMX in other buildings, standardization has value.

Our Take

Both platforms are legitimate choices for Chicago condo buildings. The decision usually comes down to:

  1. Do you need integration with other systems? → 2N
  2. Do you want the simplest possible deployment? → ButterflyMX
  3. Is long-term cost a priority? → 2N
  4. Is resident app experience the top priority? → ButterflyMX

We install and support both platforms. Contact us to discuss which fits your building’s needs, budget, and existing infrastructure.
