Access Control Repair & Ongoing Support
When a door does not open — or will not stay closed — your building's security depends on fast, competent troubleshooting. We diagnose and fix access control issues across Chicago.
Common access control issues we resolve
Most access control failures are not mysterious. They fall into predictable categories, and the fix depends on accurate diagnosis — not guesswork.
Reader failures
Readers stop responding due to wiring damage, moisture ingress, power loss, or firmware issues. We diagnose the root cause and replace or repair the component.
Door not releasing
The credential reads but the door stays locked. This is often a power issue (dead UPS, tripped breaker), a relay problem, or a misaligned strike — not the reader itself.
Credential sync problems
New fobs or mobile credentials are not working at certain doors. Usually a database sync issue, a controller offline, or permissions not propagated correctly.
Controller offline
Door controllers lose connection to the management server due to network failures, IP conflicts, or switch port issues. We restore connectivity and address the underlying cause.
Intermittent lock behavior
Doors that work sometimes and fail randomly are usually suffering from loose wiring, degrading power supplies, or network instability — problems that worsen over time.
Software and firmware issues
Outdated firmware, corrupted configurations, or software platform errors require careful troubleshooting to restore without losing credential data or schedules.
Our troubleshooting approach
Effective repair starts with diagnosis. We follow the signal path from credential to lock to find exactly where the failure occurs.
1. Gather symptoms and history
When did it start? Which doors? All credentials or specific ones? Recent changes? This narrows the scope before we touch anything.
2. Check power and network first
The majority of access control failures trace back to power or network problems. We verify PoE delivery, UPS status, controller connectivity, and switch health.
3. Isolate the failing component
Is it the reader, the controller, the lock hardware, the wiring, or the software? We test each link in the chain to pinpoint the failure.
4. Repair and document
Fix the issue, test the entire door operation end-to-end, and document what was found and changed — so the next technician has context.
Why documentation matters for repairs
Many access control problems are hard to diagnose because no one documented the original installation. We maintain wiring diagrams, IP assignments, controller configurations, and service history — so future repairs are faster and cheaper.
Preventive maintenance and remote monitoring
Reactive repair is expensive. Preventive maintenance catches problems before they cause lockouts or security gaps.
Scheduled maintenance visits
- Test every door for proper lock/unlock operation
- Inspect wiring connections and power supplies
- Verify UPS battery health and replace as needed
- Review controller firmware and software updates
- Clean and test readers and request-to-exit sensors
Remote monitoring capabilities
- Controller online/offline status alerts
- Door held-open and forced-open notifications
- Remote credential management and lockout resolution
- Audit log review and export
- Remote diagnostics to reduce on-site visits
