HID Global Readers & Credentials for Chicago Buildings

The industry standard in access control readers and smart credentials — installed and configured by Vidimost across Chicago.

The Standard in Physical Access Credentials

HID Global, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is a division of ASSA ABLOY — the world’s largest lock and door hardware manufacturer. HID has been defining physical access credential technology since the early 1990s, when the company introduced the original 125 kHz proximity card format that became the de facto standard for commercial buildings across North America and worldwide.

Today, HID manufactures the readers and credentials installed in the majority of commercial office buildings, hospitals, universities, and government facilities. If you have ever tapped a card or fob to enter a building, there is a strong chance it was an HID product.

From Proximity to Smart Credentials: A 30-Year Arc

HID’s original proximity (Prox) cards — operating at 125 kHz — dominated commercial access control for two decades. Cards like the HID ProxCard II and iCLASS became so ubiquitous that “HID card” became a generic term for building access credentials. The ProxPoint Plus reader, installed in millions of door frames, remains one of the most recognized reader form factors in the industry.

As cloning attacks made 125 kHz Prox cards a security liability, HID developed iCLASS SE and SEOS — encrypted 13.56 MHz smart card platforms that provide mutual authentication between card and reader. These platforms resist the cloning techniques that compromise legacy Prox credentials, a critical upgrade for buildings handling sensitive operations.

The current-generation HID Signo reader platform represents the convergence of all HID technologies into a single reader. A Signo reader accepts mobile credentials, SEOS smart cards, iCLASS SE, and legacy Prox — all through one device with OSDP v2 encrypted communication to the controller. For Chicago buildings migrating from legacy cards, Signo eliminates the “rip and replace” problem: the new reader works with old cards today and new credentials tomorrow.

Top Products We Install

HID Signo 20 / 40 — The current-generation multi-technology reader available in mullion (20) and single-gang (40) formats. Supports every HID credential type plus mobile access over OSDP v2. This is the reader we recommend for new installations and upgrades.

HID Signo 20K / 40K — Signo readers with integrated keypad for card-plus-PIN dual authentication at higher-security doors like server rooms, pharmaceutical storage, and executive suites.

HID iCLASS SE R40 / RK40 — Smart card readers for sites standardized on 13.56 MHz iCLASS credentials. Still widely deployed in buildings not yet ready for the Signo platform.

HID multiCLASS SE RP40 — Dual-technology reader that accepts both 125 kHz Prox and 13.56 MHz smart cards simultaneously. The go-to reader for phased credential migrations.

HID ProxPoint Plus 6005 — The legacy 125 kHz reader that remains the most widely installed proximity reader worldwide. Still serviceable for budget-constrained projects, though we recommend planning a migration path.

HID Mobile Access — Smartphone-based credentials that work with Signo and select iCLASS SE readers over Bluetooth. Increasingly popular with Chicago property managers who want to eliminate physical card distribution.

Why Vidimost Installs HID

We install HID readers daily across Chicago condos, offices, and commercial properties. HID’s reader ecosystem integrates cleanly with the Brivo and Paxton controllers we deploy, and the multiCLASS SE and Signo platforms give our clients a practical migration path from legacy credentials without service disruption.

If you are planning a credential technology upgrade or a new access control deployment, reach out. We will assess your existing readers and recommend the most cost-effective path forward.
