“How much does it cost to install security cameras?” is the most common question we hear from Chicago business owners and property managers. The honest answer is that it depends on your specific situation — but here are real numbers from recent projects to help you plan.

Per-Camera Cost Breakdown

Every camera installation has four cost components:

1. Camera Hardware: $250 – $2,500 per camera

The camera itself ranges from a basic 2MP fixed-lens turret to a high-end 4K AI-powered PTZ:

Camera TypeTypical CostBest For
2MP fixed turret$250 – $400Indoor hallways, offices, basic coverage
4MP vandal dome$400 – $700Entrances, retail, outdoor walls
4K (8MP) bullet$600 – $1,200Parking lots, wide areas, identification zones
PTZ with analytics$1,200 – $2,500Large outdoor areas, loading docks, perimeters

We primarily install Hanwha Vision and Axis Communications cameras — both deliver consistent performance in Chicago’s extreme weather conditions.

2. Cabling and Infrastructure: $150 – $500 per camera

Each camera needs a home run of Cat6 cable from the camera position to your network closet or IDF. Costs depend on:

  • Cable distance — average commercial run is 100-200 feet
  • Conduit requirements — exposed environments (garages, exterior) need conduit, which doubles labor
  • Existing infrastructure — if you already have cabling in place, this cost drops significantly
  • Pathway complexity — running cable through finished ceilings, concrete, or fire-rated walls adds time

3. Recording and Storage: $1,500 – $8,000 (shared across cameras)

You need somewhere to store footage:

  • NVR (on-site recorder) — $1,500 – $4,000 for a quality unit with redundant storage. Serves 8 to 64 cameras depending on the model. Hanwha Wisenet NVRs are our standard recommendation.
  • Cloud VMS — $5 – $30 per camera/month. Eagle Eye Networks is our primary cloud platform. Higher monthly cost but no upfront hardware expense and built-in remote access.

4. Installation Labor: $200 – $600 per camera

Professional installation includes mounting, cabling, termination, configuration, network integration, and testing. Labor cost varies based on:

  • Building height and access (lifts, scaffolding)
  • Wall/ceiling material (concrete vs drywall vs metal deck)
  • Working hours (after-hours installation in occupied buildings costs more)
  • Complexity (IP configuration, VLAN setup, VMS integration)

Total Project Cost Examples

Here are ranges from actual Chicago projects we’ve completed:

Small Office or Retail Store (4-8 cameras)

  • Hardware: $1,500 – $5,000
  • Cabling: $800 – $2,500
  • NVR/storage: $1,500 – $3,000
  • Installation: $1,000 – $3,500
  • Total: $4,800 – $14,000

Mid-Size Commercial Building (16-24 cameras)

  • Hardware: $6,000 – $18,000
  • Cabling: $3,000 – $8,000
  • NVR/storage: $3,000 – $6,000
  • Installation: $4,000 – $12,000
  • Total: $16,000 – $44,000

Large Property / Parking Structure (32-64 cameras)

  • Hardware: $15,000 – $60,000
  • Cabling: $8,000 – $25,000
  • NVR/storage: $5,000 – $15,000
  • Installation: $10,000 – $30,000
  • Network upgrades: $3,000 – $10,000
  • Total: $41,000 – $140,000

What Makes Chicago Projects More Expensive

Several factors specific to Chicago drive costs higher than national averages:

Winter installation — working in freezing conditions slows everything down. Exterior installations in January take 30-50% longer than the same work in June.

High-rise logistics — elevator scheduling, freight access, and working around tenants in occupied buildings adds coordination overhead.

Union considerations — some Chicago buildings require union labor for certain work categories. This doesn’t necessarily increase cost, but it affects scheduling and contractor selection.

Older building infrastructure — many Chicago commercial buildings have limited existing low-voltage pathways. Running new cable may require fire-stopping, asbestos surveys, or creative routing.

Permit requirements — Chicago requires permits for certain types of security installations, particularly in buildings under city landmark status.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

The most common pricing mistake is getting a quote based on camera count alone. A real quote should include:

  1. Site walkthrough — no accurate estimate is possible without seeing the building
  2. Camera placement map — specific locations, models, and purpose for each camera
  3. Network assessment — existing PoE capacity, switch ports, and VLAN design
  4. Line-item proposal — hardware, labor, and materials broken out separately
  5. Warranty and support terms — what’s covered after installation

We provide free site walkthroughs for all commercial projects in the Chicago area. Schedule yours here or call (872) 254-5015.
